Lions Club of Batu Gajah - Club Visit
On 6 September 1997, I embarked on an official club visit to the Lions Club of Batu Gajah (LCBG), the home club of PDG Lion Oon Peng Lam. As District Governor, such visits were not just procedural—they were personal affirmations of support and solidarity. I was grateful that PDG Oon and LCBG members welcomed my presence, honoring the spirit of Lionism with grace.
The journey from Penang to Batu Gajah took approximately three and a half hours, winding through the scenic Kinta District near Ipoh. Upon arrival, I discovered that the meeting was to be held in a modest café—a setting that, while unconventional, reflected the club’s resourcefulness.
Outside the venue stood President Leo Anthony, along with PDG Oon, Cheah Nyuk Phin, and Andrew Phung. Leo Anthony offered his apologies for the limited turnout. I reassured him that the presence of key officers was more than sufficient. Leadership, after all, was not measured by numbers alone.
The meeting unfolded smoothly. PDG Oon shared a comprehensive overview of the club’s initiatives—evidence of a well-guided team under his seasoned mentorship. A club with a Past District Governor at its helm holds a distinct advantage: deep-rooted knowledge, unwavering commitment, and a legacy of service.
Yet, I gently encouraged them to recruit more members. A handful of Lions can achieve much, but a growing pride ensures sustainability and broader impact.
“Even a quiet café can host a powerful conversation—when Lions gather, the mission lives.”
