Lions Club of Alor Star - Twinning Anniversary with Hatyai- 25/12/1997

Most people usually associate Lionism with charity projects, acts of kindness, and fundraisers. However, there is also an essential aspect of Lionism that is sometimes overlooked by outsiders. And that is, we Lions, are destined to promote international understanding amongst the peoples of the world. So, it is not uncommon for Lions Clubs to sign a sisterhood alliance between Lion Clubs from different cities in the world.
In the southern tip of Thailand, in Hatyai, I was invited to attend the 23rd Twinning Anniversary celebrations between two northern neighbours, the Lions Club of Alor Star and the Lions Club of Hatyai. The function was held at BP Grand Tower Hotel.

A Night to Remember:

The Lions Club of Alor Star kicked off its anniversary celebration with a brisk formal ceremony, followed by a sumptuous course dinner that set the tone for an evening of camaraderie and joy. While some protocols were relaxed in honor of the occasion, the essential traditions stood firm—respectfully upheld by a club that knows how to balance dignity with delight.

The Presidents of Alor Star and Hatyai took turns to address the crowd, their words echoing pride and gratitude. As the final speaker, I felt a surge of anticipation. Knowing that our Thai guests were present, I had picked up a bit of Thai slang and began my speech with a cheerful “Sawadeekap.” The hall erupted in applause—an instant bridge across borders.

I spoke about the importance of international relations, especially in a region where Lions from different nations often cross paths in service and celebration. My message was simple: friendship knows no boundaries, and service is a language we all understand.

As the formalities gave way to festivity, the Lions loosened their ties—literally and figuratively—and embraced the spirit of fellowship. The night unfolded with games, music, and dance, each moment weaving stronger bonds between us and our Thai counterparts.

When the familiar notes of the Thai classic “Loy Krathong” filled the hall, something magical happened. Everyone—Malaysian and Thai alike—joined in song and dance, their voices rising in harmony, their steps moving as one. It wasn’t just entertainment; it was a celebration of 23 years of enduring friendship.

That night, the Lions of Alor Star reminded us all that joy, respect, and unity are the true pillars of our movement. And as I looked around the hall, I saw not just club members—I saw lifelong friends.
